If you’re like me, then you love icons. Especially complete sets of icons that include folders that you use but may not be conventional, like a WIP folder, an Icons folder, etc. Icons that match your system, your style, your applications, your peripherals, the list goes on and on. But what happens when you find a set of icons that you like and want to try out and the only format the icon is available in is a format where you’re not able to use the conventional methods? Well, you can purchase (or sample) CandyBar, the demi-god of customization apps. Or you can use LiteIcon, the free alternate but lacking in features. Or what about forcing the ICNS file to have a file in its preview so you can use the conventional methods? I chose the latter and went looking.

Where I landed was Pic2Icon, the amazing free application that creates icons of pictures with a simple drag and drop. Example: Open up Pic2Icon and drop in a PNG file of you at a party. Pic2Icon will generate an icon and place it in the Get Info (CMD+I) window. The file will retain its original file type but now, it doubles as a Mac icon as well! When I first got this app, I converted folders of Pry ICNS files that I thought I wouldn’t be able to use as system icons. And that’s another feature; Pic2Icon allows for batch conversions, which means you can change a whole folder of pictures just by dropping the folder in.
